Here is a template letter of support for the occupation to send to as many of the councillors and MPs bellow as possible. If you can re-write the letter yourself that is best of all, but if you don’t at least personalise it in someway by adding your own address at the top and ‘Yours Sincerely…’ at the bottom.

Dear XXX

I am writing to urge you to give your full support for the exciting community re-occupation of the Royal Park school in the Hyde Park area.

The occupation and holding of the building via the proper legal channel of ‘Section 6 of the Criminal Law Act 1977’ is clearly a positive act in service of the community. As a local resident I have been distressed to see such a great community asset as the Royal Park School fall into total disrepair. For the first time in many years I have seen constructive work carried out there: The weeds have been taken from the play ground, the doors opened up. Whilst I am aware of concerns about safety, the occupiers have done their utmost to fix all the dangerous areas of the building alerted to them by the council. They have also had a constructive visit from the fire services and implemented all their health and safety suggestions.

Since the occupation I have seen for the first time the building being put to good use. For instance there was a warm and constructive ‘Open Day’ on Saturday 14th November where all sections of our local community came together to share tea and cake, juggling and circus skills, apple pressing and much else. The space is now a no smoking, no drugs and no alcohol site that is opening up possibilities for the area. I look forward to seeing the development of this space in service of the community.

The group who have under taken the occupation are encouraging all ages, races and social groups within our community to feel included and get involved. Surely this is the aim of a community space and hence should receive all possible encouragement. The occupiers will appear in court on Monday 23rd of November. I urge you to use the position of authority invested in you by the people of Leeds to support the occupation as much as you can.

Yours sincerely

XXX
